U. PASANEN BAND - LONG LONG WAY (2018)

COMBI COUPÉ

A c-cassette in a Blaupunkt stereo
blues rock rolling in my car
I grip the wheel and put pedal to the metal
and find my inner highway star
in 1985

I got a 9-0-0 with a 2 liter turbo
metallic blue with chrome alloys
and what a smooth ride the C.C. gives me
you know the feeling, feeling, a kid with a new toy

Once you drive it you won't ever be the same, I'm talking 'bout

Driving down the Highway 9
sitting in a saddle of my brand new Combi Coupé
I entertain my charming self by speeding up my mighty Saab
down, down goes my gas pedal foot

Bring me a doctor or a medicine man
just anyone who can rescue me
well I should have listen to the Beamer boys
so I wouldn't have to struggle with this damn disease

Once you drive it you won't ever be the same, I'm talking 'bout

Driving down the Highway 9
sitting in a saddle of my brand new Combi Coupé
I entertain my charming self by speeding up my mighty Saab
down, down goes my gas pedal foot

THIS IS THE END

Tell me baby what I always want to hear from you
that I'm still the same young charmer to whom you said I do
a few white lies about how gently time has treated me
and how my medium size t-shirts still suit me and I just might believe

Oh my god, my hair is turning grey
soon I'll look as old as my band mates
I never thought this day would come
I was supposed to stay forever young
this is the end

You flutter your lashes saying: "let's have fun, you know just me and you,
food and wine and Texas Boogie and dancing all night through"
Oh baby baby, have some mercy, what if we skipped the dance
I might hurt my back or pelvis, I'm not Elvis anymore, those days are gone

Oh my god, my hair is turning grey
soon I'll look as old as my band mates
I never thought this day would come
I was supposed to stay forever young
this is the end

(solo)

I never thought this day would come
I was supposed to stay forever young
this is the end

Oh my god, my hair is turning grey
soon I'll look as old as my band mates
I never thought this day would come
the kids surprised me with a rocking chair
now this is the end
this is the ned
this is the ned
this is the end

LITTLE ONE

Young butterfly, just a while ago they found you
learning to talk and taking your first steps, oh how time flies
young butterfly, still so innocent and fragile
don't you be in such a hurry to grow up, be patient, child

Wherever you go from here, whatever comes your way
look over your shoulder, there's your home, a thought away

Momma can't hide, a tear is rolling down her cheek
daddy won't show the way he feels until you leave
they're trying so hard to accept that you are leaving home today
their little one

Young tiger, now you're standing there in the doorway
you turn around and claim that everything's alright,
hiding behind your smile
young tiger, deep down you're afarid and you wonder
are you strong enough to face the world so cruel and will you
learn how to survive

Wherever you go from here, whatever comes your way
look over your shoulder, there's your home, a thought away

Momma can't hide, a tear is rolling down her cheek
daddy won't show the way he feels until you leave
they're trying so hard to accept that you are leaving home today
their little one

(solo)

SONS AND FATHERS

One is given awards for being so damn good
he's followed the manual of the perfect fatherhood
the other fails again but they love him anyway

One is proud of his roots, he looks up to his old man
the other's leaving home, he hates rules and future plans
taking a distance either helps and eases your pain
or takes you deeper

There you're holding the little man in your arms
how to make things go right, well that's the tricky part

Sons and fathers, sandcastles and bar boats
how to slow down time
sons and fathers, growing pains and rough roads
is it all about hoping for the best or preparing for the worst

How to ride a bike, how to fix a broken toy
how to steal apples, how to hit back a bully boy
anyone can teach that but how to become and be a man

Who teaches what to whom and who's the one to blame
if all goes wrong or doesn't go the way things should go, is there a right way
I, for one, throw up my hands

There you're lying on his chest feeling safe
until you notice how your childhood slips away

Sons and fathers, sandcastles and bar boats
how to slow down time
sons and fathers, growing pains and rough roads
is it all about hoping for the best or preparing for the worst

(solo)

THE BOND

I remember the crossroads
the road to you
your house on the hill and our wild games
on the cliffs and in the woods
those worriless days
where are they now
did we just spoil it all by growing up
well, there's no doubt

Got lost in my memories
to see it again
we've come a long long way
together, my firend
there's a place, a time, a lived childhood
a bond between me and you, blood brother
the bond that never breaks

We both found our sunshines
became proud family men
we drowned in our everday lives
but here we go again
we've both had our troubles
not so glorious days
but what comes to our youngr years
there's nothing I'd change

Got lost in my memories
to see it again
we've come a long long way
together, my firend
there's a place, a time, a lived childhood
a bond between me and you, blood brother
the bond that never breaks, it won't ever break

JOHN BONE & THE BONEBAGS

It's all about music
look how they love to play
nothing but music
when did it all change
you don't know the system, someone shouts
without a hit song you are out, and what's that language you use
it is a long way to the top and you're not even half way but you
at least know how to play, if it's important today

John Bone & the Bonebags
local heroes or nothing but zeros
John Bone & the Bonebags
mommas love but neighbors don't
John Bone & the Bonebags
entertainers or noise makers
John Bone & the Bonebags
do we really have to pay for their show, oh no

You made it your mission
to say what's on your mind
you just don't like the music they play
and you really have tried
they still have their day jobs, so chill out
they keep their feet on the ground for not to accidently break
John and the boys just love to do what they do and if it ruins someone's day
maybe it's better stay away, they paly for those who stay

John Bone & the Bonebags
local heroes or nothing but zeros
John Bone & the Bonebags
mommas love but neighbors don't
John Bone & the Bonebags
entertainers or noise makers
John Bone & the Bonebags
do we really have to pay for their show, oh no

SILENT MAN

A tight fist with white knuckles and a
glazed look, they tells a story 'bout a time
the time you can't deny

Sad eyes but not teary so that
no one could consider him weak
men don't cry and so it's always been

It's a hell of a road from a war hero to the silent man
the battle's ceased but still he feels the gun in his hand
where he's been and what he's seen, he'll take it with him six feet deep

What did we expect to hear
wild adventures, brave and heroic deeds
instead of misery

War is over, so they say but how
it feels like nothing's better or changed
now he's home but still away, far away

It's a hell of a road from a war hero to the silent man
the battle's ceased but still he feels the gun in his hand
where he's been and what he's seen, he'll take it with him six feet deep

(solo)

It's a hell of a road from a war hero to the silent man
the battle's ceased but still he feels the gun in his hand
where he's been and what he's seen, he'll take it with him six feet deep

Silent man, silent man
silent man, silent man
silent man, a hell of a road you walked, now rest in peace

SOME JUST KNOW

A Southern boy behind the wheel of a truck
his pockets filled with dreams but he's stuck
he feels he should be somewhere else,
working 9 to 5 just doesn't rock

He loves to sing and knows a few dance moves
he thinks he's good and that he wnats to prove
the big boys listen, hesitate,
one thinks maybe, another shakes his head and shoots:
"you just don't have what it takes"

Some just know life is tough
to reach high the kid's not good enough
some just know and spit it out:
"stick to your day job, boy, you're never gonna be a star"

What if the boy had given up and gone
without starting to play and sing that one song
he could have left the building but instead
he decided to prove the doubters wrong

The Southern boy with his '54 Fleetwood
driving through the old neighborhood
he smiles by curling his upper lip
while recalling the big boy's words and attitude
"you just don't have what it takes"

Some just know life is tough
to reach high the kid's not good enough
some just know and spit it out:
"stick to your day job, boy, you're never gonna be a star"

(solo)

Some just know life is tough
to reach high the kid's not good enough
some just know and spit it out:

no way, not a chance

SEPTEMBER GIRL

There we stood under the stairs on a rainy night
you smiled to me and said the words that changed my life
an ordinary story for those who weren't there
the start of something precious for those who were,
I knew it then, I know it now
you are the one

You were and still are my everything, September girl
you light up my life by being you, September girl
you've been my strength na d my rock since you entered my world
thank you for still being mine

You know I'm not a superstitious man, but you, I can't explain
of all people, of all places you chose me and gave my way
I hope I've told you often enough what you mean to me
'cause you are the reason why I still breathe,
baby I loved you then, I love you now
you are the one

You were and still are my everything, September girl
you light up my life by being you, September girl
you've been my strength na d my rock since you entered my world
thank you for still being mine and only mine

(solo)

BORN LIKE THIS

Though I say so myself
I've got all it takes to be
better than the rest, the king of the hill
even my mom says I'm unique
why should I pretend to be something that I'm not
I wasn't meant to stay down and blend into the crowd
see me shine

Look at all the things I've achieved
one lucky bastard's living in me
who wouldn't love me, everyone, line up!
and I'll give you all a chance to kiss my feet
if someone doesn't like me it's his problem, not mine
all I've ever done is being just the perfect me
just the modest me

I've done that and a heck of a lot more
I've been there and pretty much seen it all
I've done nothing wrong, I was born like this
talk like me, tell every useless details
walk like me like you own the place
to taste what it's like to be born like this

I'm a know-it-all and never wrong
in other words approachable in every way
what can I say, this is who I am
and they say I should shut up and be shamed
why would I hide it if I'm impeccable
a special case, a masterpiece, just one of a kind
momma, look at me

I've done that and a heck of a lot more
I've been there and pretty much seen it all
I've done nothing wrong, I was born like this
talk like me, tell every useless details
walk like me like you own the place
to taste what it's like to be born like this

SUPERMAN

There he goes, who wouldn't say whoa
full of life, no sign of bitterness
from day one he's been living to win
not to give up or settle for second best
not even when the sky came down crushing all his dreams
he thought: "svrew you, bad luck" and forced himself back on his feet
could you do the same

I bite my tongue and star my whining, shame on me
he's been through hell but does he show it

Where'd he get his power to fight fire with fire
and take his fate in his own hands
where'd he get his strong will to fight back and stay alive
no wonder he's called superman, there he goes

Seventeen days somewhere far
fighting for life just to get punched in the face
"you may not speak or walk again"
a few words said and everything is changed
he's seen bad days, good days but never a day when he'd give up
they said no to walk, now he runs, go and try to make him stop
well, not a chance

A small wound and I think I'm dying, shame on me
he's been through hell but does he show it

Where'd he get his power to fight fire with fire
and take his fate in his own hands
where'd he get his strong will to fight back and stay alive
no wonder he's called superman

Where'd he get his power to fight fire with fire
and take his fate in his own hands
where'd he get his strong will to fight back and stay alive
no wonder he's called superman, superman, superman, superman

A TOAST TO THE PLAYERS

I heard a rumor there's a band palying in uptown
you know that good old stuff that makes you tap your feet
and moves your body to the beat
the man with his guitar, they say he really knows is job
and when his solos fill the room, you just don't ever want him stop

The Strat man with his son and a local bass ace
started the band and the rest is history
blues rock documentary
the first singer with his charm was a breakthrough
and all the drumming gents along the way, hats off to each of you

A toast to the players of yesterday and today
a whole bottle to Ukko himself
a toast to the players, to all the guest musicians
to the familiar faces in the audience as well
let's have a toast to twenty years

Then came the wind of change and carried away the first singer
and I'm the one who had the chance to step into
those big and shiny boots
I love boots, I really do but they suit him better than me
but he's always welcome to the stage to jam with his family

A toast to the players of yesterday and today
a whole bottle to Ukko himself
a toast to the players, to all the guest musicians
to the familiar faces in the audience as well
let's have a toast to twenty years

(solo)

U. PASANEN BAND - GREY HOUSE (2012)

NO BAND WITHOUT THE VAN

An open road ahead, a day without clouds
the four-wheel beauty in matt black on the move heading south
and inside that precious Benz
we find ourselves on the way to Fiskars Village to play to our friendz
so thumbs up for this old horse
no band without the van

We should be grateful to the local police
they fined us, took the plates but first of all gave us reprieve
saying: "go and do your show"
some had forgotten to have the car inspected, that's why the episode
thank goodness they understood
no band without the van

(solo)

We finally found it, that village so fine
kind-hearted people with hospitality and free wine
in return we played them bluesy tunes
we wanted so much to stay but we were forced to obey
the constables in blue
to be back home by ten a.m.
no band without the van

(solo)

There's no band without the van and we've got these gigs to do
mister inspector, would you kindly let the van pass through
there's no band without the van and no van without the brakes
answers the man and tells us not to come back 'til the car's okay

There's no band without the van
no band without the van
no U.P.B. without the Mercedes
no band without the van

LET'S NOT LET IT FADE

Have I told you 'bout Ritchie
and what about John, Whip and Fuse
a heck of a bunch of clowns with four big hearts and guess who's
proud to know those dudes
we just allowed ourselves the freedom to be young boys again
hear me saying: let's not let it fade

On the top of the mountain
under the October sky
we did not save the world, we did not win a war, we
just felt ourselves alive
I know we come from different backgrounds but it's never meant a thing
hear me saying: let's not let it fade

It's more about good vibrations and feelings than
working our fingers to the bone
more like having a good, good time without
worrying about tomorrow

(solo)

There are things to remember
and days we never thought we'd see
but did we ever see the rain on a sunny day
well that's a mystery
rain or shine, that doesn't matter, I'd live it all again
hear me saying: let's not let it fade

It's more about good vibrations and feelings than
working our fingers to the bone
more like having a good, good time without
worrying about tomorrow

(solo)

Let's not let it fade

NO REGRETS

Fill my glass, I am on my way
I just wash the goddamn salt away

You stopped crawling, packed your things
had enough of cringing for the kings
"feed your lions, make your wars",
so you said and shouted: "this is not what I've lived for!"

And now you're flying
free as a bird and you've got

No regrets … 'bout finding air to breathe
no regrets …'bout being brave
no regrets …but to let you go was a big defeat

Through the ridges and winding roads
cross that foamy water and you're home
out of reach and out of sight
far from cloudy Mondays, lucky you, you found your light

All I'm trying
is not to envy you friend

No regrets … 'bout finding air to breathe
no regrets …'bout being brave
no regrets …but to let you go was a big defeat

(solo)

Hear me brother, hear me friend
wait a while and we will meet again
hate to scare you but once I'm there
I may stay a little longer than you thought I dare

Whoa beware now, all I'm saying
is that you won't ever get rid of me

No regrets … 'bout finding air to breathe
no regrets …'bout being brave
no regrets …but to let you go was a
big defeat …and that's for sure, yeah
no regrets, no regrets, no regrets, no regrets
I say no regrets

NICKELS AND DRINKS

I heard the songs on an old tube radio
saw myself bending strings like Chuck and Bo
howling loud like the wolf from West Point
shaking the boogie with my harp like Sonny Boy
one day I learn to play, found a band and play the blues
to full houses and I live the life I choose
so I dreamed

Almost forgot I was born in the cold north
where a bluesman plays for nickels and drinks

Jimi came and turned my whole world upside down
Stevie Ray did the same, where are they now?
do the kids even know where their music's from
without the blues would their Datsuns jump by the drum
one day I learn to play, found a band and play the blues
to full houses and I live the life I choose
so I dreamed

Almost forgot I was born in the cold north
where a bluesman plays for nickels and drinks

(solo)

It blew my mind and I almost peed my pants
when John M. asked Eric C. to join the band
All your love and Ramblin' on my mind
just wait and see and one day I play them live
one day I learn to play, found a band and play the blues
to full houses and I live the life I choose
so I dreamed

Almost forgot I was born in the cold north
where a bluesman plays for nickels and drinks
where a bluesman plays for nickels and drinks
where a bluesman plays for nickels and drinks

FLYING LOW

Well you finally came and found me
singing rhythm 'n' blues
oh how shocking it must've been
to find out it's true
and bloody me I didn't warn you
the boys like playing loud 'n' wild
please forgive us if we let you down
by sounding quite good to night

Save your money and stay at home
it's much safer than flying low …flying low

Now that you've seen it and been there
was it worth coming down?
in your position it's unwise
getting this near the ground
hey what's happening, did you just dance?
I could swear I saw your legs move
don't worry, it's totally harmless to feel the music
even the rhythm 'n' blues

Save your money and stay at home
it's much safer than flying low …flying low

(solo)

DRIFT AWAY

What about the dirt in my hands
what else could I do but to shoot him down
I'm not proud of myself, not proud what I've done
but what's done is done and now he's lying on the ground
I try to think of you, the light of my life
and all the good times just to drift away

I did it in the name of … our fathers' land
so the bear with its big teeth …would understand
that we don't want them here
that we're gonna fight till the bitter end
I try to think of you and everyone at home
to chase away this dark and cold and to drift away

(solo)

This is where I was born …and where I will die
a wish and a prayer …so I would not die tonight
not till I've seen my baby
not till I've held her hand in mine
help me through these days and nights
help me, help me, help me … to drift away

SAVE ME

I see your valley and mountain
your river and lake
this view and you all around me
takes my breath away

My heavy steps on your moorland
don't feel heavy tonight
because you carry me and your whispering winds
says everything's alright

Keep me warm and be the one who stays and
makes sure I fall asleep

Save me, take me under your wings tonight
keep away the bad clouds from the sky
walk me through the night until morning white
promise me you never vanish from sight

Stranded in open waters
lost in the wilds of life
in some peculiar way I find you always there
for me to be my guide

I see the sun go down and how it paints the sky
the water, the trees, the whole surrounding view
there's nowhere else I'd rather be than
in this moment with you

Be my woman, my mother nature
be the air I breathe

Save me, take me under your wings tonight
keep away the bad clouds from the sky
walk me through the night until morning white
promise me you never vanish from sight

(solo)

My heavy steps on your moorland
don't feel heavy tonight

save me, stay and save me, save me, woman, save me

THERE BEHIND THE BLINDS

Could you keep your voice down
they might misunderstand
and think of me as some softy
instead of a man
so no love talk in public
no walking hand in hand

Go and light up your candles
I'll come with wine and romance
as soon as me and the tigers
stop comparing our fangs
you know, just roaring and boasting
sweat smell and beer cans

A man's got to do what a man's got to do
can you blame me for that

There behind the blinds …in twilight …alone …with you
I'm your man … your poodle …your slave …your fool
call my name …and I'll be there …to squeeze …you tight
unless these strong …and manly …hands and arms …are tied
by moving mountains

It's not that I wouldn't love you
I love you more than you know
but please don't force me to shout it
loud here on the phone
can't you see I am a big boy
and big boys never do so

A man's got to do what a man's got to do
can you blame me for that

There behind the blinds …in twilight …alone …with you
I'm your man … your poodle …your slave …your fool
call my name …and I'll be there …to squeeze …you tight
unless these strong …and manly …hands and arms …are tied
by moving mountains or playing solos like this

(solo)

NAME OF THIS GAME

Take off your hat, boy, it's an order
step inside and meet my attitude
are you having troubles, having pain?
convince me that there's something wrong with you

I'm Mark the Bumptious and aware of my greatness
if you don't like, that's a shame
my mission is to send you back in the battlefield
despite your bruises, that's the name of this game

Don't try to fool me, I know you all
damn slackers trying to find a hideaway
you came for nothing with made-up stories
it's written on your forehead: just a fake

I'm Mark the Bumptious and aware of my greatness
if you don't like, that's a shame
my mission is to send you back in the battlefield
despite your bruises, that's the name of this game

(solo)

I've got poison for your every ache
and it can do no harm to give you some more
and when I say you're strong enough to fight, you just go and stay alive
and stay the hell away from my door

I'm Mark the Bumptious and aware of my greatness
if you don't like, that's a shame
my mission is to send you back in the battlefield
despite your bruises, that's the name of this game

I'm Mark the Bumptious and aware of my greatness
if you don't like, that's a shame
my mission is to send you back in the battlefield
despite your bruises, that's the name of this game

HIS THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU

When it comes, when it finds him
the certain picture of you, of your face
he's scared to move and hardly breathing
'cause you might fade as suddenly as you came
he could be thinking of all that he has lost
when he hasn't been there by your side
but it would only take him deeper
he rather spends his longing recalling the good times

Things gone wrong and done unwisely
but it was then when the sky weren't so blue
more important is what he wants you to know
today or tomorrow, his thoughts are with you

Whoever said he'd be perfect
he may have made some mistakes but haven't we all
all that matters is that you'll always be aware
whatever happened in the past wasn't your fault

Things gone wrong and done unwisely
but it was then when the sky weren't so blue
more important is what he wants you to know
today or tomorrow, his thoughts are with you

(solo)

The light may fade beyond the window
but his feelings for you will always be there
to be away from his loved one
must be the heaviest load that this father bears

Things gone wrong and done unwisely
but it was then when the sky weren't so blue
more important is what he wants you to know
today or tomorrow, his thoughts are with you

GREY HOUSE

I still smell the old wood from early days
it's like yesterday would have never gone away
I find my way back to the tumbledown door
of the shack in the backyard where my blues was born
just me and my first plank guitar and
the grey house, grey house

I do remember how I used to sneak
into my hideaway with my guitar and my zeal
just to get better day by day
and to prove my grandma wrong when she says:
if you learn to play then I fly above this
grey house, grey house
grey house, grey house

(solo)

Damn these sore fingers, damn these cramped hands
how many times a fool has to stumble 'til he understands
but the fool kept stumbling, training like mad
and no one could stop him, well, no one but his dad
who after hearing enough unplugged the whole place
the grey house, grey house
grey house, grey house
grey house, grey house
grey house, grey house
